PhD Research

I’m currently completing a PhD in the Department of Drama at the University of Exeter, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Association.

My research focuses on representations of regional English cities in contemporary theatre and explores class, geography and place in contemporary British theatre.

To date, my research has been published in the European Journal of Theatre and Performance and JAWS Journal and presented at the annual conference of the Theatre and Performance Research Association.

In 2018, I was also commissioned by Luke Pollard MP to write a White Paper on Culture in Plymouth and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.

Although rarely taking a particularly auto-ethnographic approach, my research focus on the geographic distribution of cultural and symbolic capital as it relates to British theatre is heavily inspired by my own experience as a playwright and theatre director in Plymouth.

If you’d like to hear a bit more about my research, I recently made a short video shedding a little bit of light on it…
