Written for The Bike Shed Theatre’s New Blood, Bare Bones festival, Common Sense was inspired by the centenary of Universal Suffrage and the birth of Prince George.
A baby has been born. This baby will one day be King or Queen, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of His/Her other Realms and Territories King/Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith. But why, in twenty first century Britain, should the highest office in the land be decided by birthright? And, when we’ve fought so hard for democracy, do we let this anomaly continue?
Common Sense is a mash-up of monologue, flag-waving and the obligatory Sex Pistols.
